40 MHz

(2021-05-09) PE1ITR

On this page a description of my 40 MHz station and the reception reports. The station was ready in March 2021. At the beginning of May I started actively monitoring this band.

The last year there has been increasing interest in the 8m band. For example, a number of beacon transmitters are active and in an increasing number of countries amateurs have received permission to conduct experiments on this band. The 8m (40 MHz) is interesting for ionospheric radio research because it fills the gap between the 10m (28 MHz) and 6m (50 MHz) band.

The frequencies where there is activity depends on the permission per country. This can be between 40 and 41 MHz. It seems that most station activity is concentrated around 40,680 MHz. The beacons have their own frequency.

Station

The antenna is a tuned dipole at 40 MHz. The construction can be seen in the photos. The antenna is occasionally mounted on a mast at a height of 4m. Usually polarized horizontally.

For the receiver I use an SDR with a band filter + premap in front of it. I also have a ready-made 40 to 28 MHz transverter that I usually use lately. The rear set can then be my traditional HF receiver or an SDR.
